GRAHAM has been appointed by funds managed by Starwood Capital Group to undertake the multi-million pound refurbishment of The Grand Hotel on Colmore Row in Birmingham.
Originally built in 1879 by Isaac Horton, whose family still owns it today, The Grand Hotel is a Grade II* Listed building, occupying a prominent and imposing position on the city’s prestigious Colmore Row with views over St Philip’s Cathedral. GRAHAM will now complete the final part of the refurbishment, with works comprising the design and fit out of approximately 15,254 sq m internal floor space to create a 185-bedroom luxury hotel.
In addition to accommodation, the refurbishment by GRAHAM will include a lounge, destination restaurant and bars, gym facilities, conference and meeting rooms, commercial kitchens, and an external feature terrace. GRAHAM will also carry out the sensitive restoration of the prestigious Grosvenor ballroom.
Before its closure in 2002, the hotel was frequented by Britain’s high society with royalty, politicians and celebrities often checking in for the evening or to attend parties in the elaborately decorated Grosvenor Room.
John Maguire, Regional Business Development Director for GRAHAM’s Birmingham office, says: “The Grand Hotel is a symbol of Birmingham’s rich history. We are pleased to be working with the Hortons’ Estate and Starwood Capital Group to restore the building to its former glory. The sympathetic refurbishment will provide the historic building with a new lease of life and offer Birmingham’s prestigious Colmore Row a luxury venue for overnight stays and parties once again.”
The project is already well underway with an expected completion date in Q2 2020.
