Scarborough wins planning approval in Newport

Scarborough Development Group, the property development and investment company, has been granted outline planning consent by Newport City Council for the multi-million pound redevelopment of the Cambrian Centre.

The site will provide retail, office and leisure opportunities for the city, making a contribution to the city centre regeneration efforts by Newport City Council and Newport Unlimited.

The scheme will replace the existing Cambrian Centre, which has become increasingly run-down in recent years and suffers from poor design and high vacancy levels.

The new development will comprise: 42,000 sq ft of office space; a 68,000 sq ft flagship supermarket; four other high-quality high street retail outlets; a 20-stop bus station and modern waiting area; and 513 car parking spaces over three levels.

Mark Jackson, managing director of Scarborough Development Group, says: “We want to create a development that will pull people into the city and help reinvigorate Newport as a whole. This is a milestone in the redevelopment of the city and underpins the council’s plans to regenerate the city centre.”

Scarborough Development Group acquired the Cambrian Centre site as part of a larger portfolio of development opportunities from the administrators of developer Modus earlier this year.
